Auckland Council provides a rubbish collection service, but it only covers certain types of waste. Private rubbish removal companies collect almost anything, including the bulky items and bulk loads that council will not touch. Which option you need depends on what you are trying to get rid of.
Here is a clear breakdown of both so you can choose the right one.
What Auckland Council’s Rubbish Collection Covers
Auckland Council offers two main council-run options for getting rid of waste.
Kerbside collection
Most Auckland households have a weekly or fortnightly kerbside collection for general rubbish and recycling. It is included in your rates, so there is no extra charge for using it regularly.
The key limitations are worth knowing:
- You must use the council-issued bin or approved bags (red for general rubbish)
- There are weight and size limits per collection
- Only bagged household rubbish is accepted
- Bulky items like furniture, appliances, and timber are not collected
- Garden waste has its own separate bin (not all properties have one)
For everyday household rubbish, kerbside collection is perfectly adequate. The problem arises when you have more than everyday waste.
Auckland Council transfer stations
If you have a larger load or items that cannot go in the kerbside bin, you can take them to an Auckland Council transfer station (also called a Resource Recovery Centre or the public drop-off at a landfill). These accept most types of waste, including furniture, appliances, and green waste.
The catch: you have to load it yourself, transport it there, and unload it. You will pay a fee based on the weight or volume of your load, typically in the range of $5 to $20 for small household loads, though a trailer load of mixed waste can be considerably more. It is a reasonable option if you have a ute or trailer, time to spare, and only a moderate amount to dispose of.
When Private Rubbish Removal Makes More Sense
A private rubbish removal service sends a team to your property, loads everything for you, and takes it away. You do not need a trailer, do not need to make a trip to the transfer station, and do not need to do any lifting. The service costs money, but it covers what council cannot.
Private removal is the better option when:
- You are moving out and need a property cleared quickly
- You are doing a renovation and have mixed waste including timber, plasterboard, or tiles
- You have bulky items like old sofas, mattresses, fridges, or appliances
- You are clearing a deceased estate or rental property between tenants
- You have bulk garden waste that does not fit the green bin, such as a big pruning job or hedge removal
- You need same-day or fast turnaround rather than waiting for the next collection day
For residents in East Auckland suburbs like Howick, Botany, Pakuranga, Flat Bush, and Dannemora, a local private removal company can often get the job done the same day.
A Note on Auckland’s Inorganic Collection
For many years, Auckland Council ran an inorganic kerbside collection, where residents could leave large items on the kerb and council would collect them for free. That service no longer runs. Auckland Council ended the city-wide inorganic collection programme some years ago, and there is no equivalent free service to replace it.
This means that for bulky items you want removed without a trip to the transfer station, private rubbish removal is now the main option. It fills the gap the old inorganic collection used to cover.
Cost Comparison: Council vs Private
| Option | Typical Cost | What It Covers | You Load It? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kerbside collection | Included in rates | Bagged household rubbish only | Yes (you bag it) |
| Transfer station drop-off | $5-$20+ (small loads) | Most waste types | Yes |
| Private rubbish removal | From around $80-$150+ | Almost anything, bulky items included | No |
Council options are the most economical for everyday household waste. Private removal costs money but saves significant time and physical effort, and it is the only realistic option for bulky or large-volume loads if you do not have a trailer.
